What is now Novato was originally the site of several Coast Miwok villages: Chokecherry, near downtown Novato, Puyuku, near Ignacio, and Olompali at the present Olompali State Historic Park. Novato is located about 30 miles from San Francisco and in many ways offers the most traditional “small town America” feel of any city in Marin. The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit ( SMART) is scheduled to open sometime in Spring 2017. When complete, it will serve a 70-mile corridor between Cloverdale in northern Sonoma County and Larkspur landing in Marin County. SMART is a voter-approved passenger rail and bicycle-pedestrian pathway that will connect Novato residents and visitors with jobs, recreation and other services. Novato offers some great options, such as relatively low home prices, generous lots with flat lawns, tons of sun, and a quality school system. The Grant Street business district has been redeveloped into a charming downtown area, a new Trader Joe’s market opened in 2007, and Whole Foods opened in 2010. Novato offers beautiful hiking trails, woodsy canyons and amazing views of golden rolling hills.
